El Retiro’s Accommodation
El Retiro accommodates groups of up to 11 people in 6 bedrooms with 4 bathrooms. There are 4 bedrooms with double beds, 1 bedroom with twin beds and 1 bedroom with a large single bed.
The Monet Suite and Georgia O’Keefe Suite have en-suite bathrooms. The Georgia O’Keefe Family Suite has a walk-through dressing room which can also accommodate an additional single bed for a child.
The Frida Kahlo and Van Gogh bedrooms share the Moroccan-themed bathroom and the Picasso double and Miro single room have use of the beach bathroom.
Rest assured! All bedrooms have comfortable mattresses, storage facilities for clothes, and fresh changes of linen and towels are available.
There is a fully equipped kitchen with an open-plan living room that leads to a roof terrace with a dining area and magnificent views.
In the vine-covered shaded courtyard in the centre of this traditional old Cortijo, there is a charcoal bar-b-que with a chimney for al fresco dining.
The natural swimming pool area has sun loungers, and an outdoor sculpture/shower. It is a great place to take a dip and swim in the non-planted zone, surrounded by lilies and marginal plants, or watch the resident swallows swooping down to sip the water and the many varieties of visiting dragonflies.
There are plenty of other areas to sit in the garden, you can lie in a hammock, find a private spot to read a book or sketch in the surrounding olive grove.
El Retiro is set in the middle of an olive grove and has its’ own orchard.
You can even pick your own fresh figs for breakfast.

El Retiro’s Location
This rural retreat is set high in the hills near the Subbetica mountains, the largest of which, La Tiñosa can be seen from the house. The area is full of wildlife, particularly migratory birds, birds of prey, ibex, lizards and geckos. Guided nature walks can be arranged.
Walking just above the Cortijo you will find even more spectacular views across to Loja, Iznajar, The Subbetica Mountains, Fuenta des Cesna and beyond…
The skies at night from the roof terrace are staggering with hardly any pollution from light.
El Retiro is in a remote hilltop location, however, the nearby traditional town of Algarinejo, is just a 15-minute drive and boasts some of the finest restaurants in the region, with a good range of shops and a well-stocked supermarket. The many bars serve free tapas with drinks and the locals are very friendly.
The towns around El Retiro are well worth exploring, Priego de Cordoba with traditional architecture and vibrant nightlife. Iznajar with its famous lake, overlooked by the castle at the top of this pretty Pueblo Blanco town and the picturesque hilltop town of Montefrio. Further afield, the Cities of Granada, Cordoba and Malaga are not to be missed, with some of the finest historic architecture, traditional music and dancing in Spain and of course the shops and markets.
El Retiro’s Facilities
On arrival, you will receive a welcome pack. Some essentials are available to buy at El Retiro. There is also an outside bar with a fridge by the pool with an honesty box… The accommodation includes a large well-equipped kitchen/living space with an outdoor roof terrace. The large yoga studio also serves as a dining room/games room. Outside spaces include the gravel sculpture garden, areas for sunbathing around the pool and a shady internal vine-covered courtyard.

You will find some of the finest restaurants and bars in Andalucia in the surrounding villages, so soak up the atmosphere and sample the tapas and cuisine. You will not be disappointed.
How to get to El Retiro
El Retiro, Cortijo Zamorano, Algarinejo is situated 1 1/2 hours drive, from Malaga and Granada airports. 2 hours 20 minutes from Seville airport. There are buses to Algarinejo, but unless you are cycling (and it’s hilly!) then you will need a car in this remote location.
*If hiring a car, try to book one with good clearance as the 2 km track to the house is steep and stony. It’s not necessary to hire a 4×4 vehicle, but low-slung cars may struggle.
